It is important for people
of all ages to take care of their oral health. it is equally essential for the
elderly population to seek dental health care. Geriodontics is the delivery of
dental care to older adults involving the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment
of problems associated with normal aging and age-related diseases, it is
important for older individuals to remain diligent about their oral health
care.
Many dental issues that
disproportionately affect seniors are difficult to detect in the early
stages.
The dental care needs of the elderly are not
very different from those of others, but they are complicated by a number of
impairments which includes physical, sensory, and cognitive aging and dental health
related to age and aging. The inter connection between dental health and
overall health is even more important as the elderly generally possess less
immunity.
Natural consequences of aging:
·
While dry mouth is not a requirement of
aging, it nonetheless affects 20% of patients older than 55years and up to 30%
of patients older than 70 years.
·
Among the elderly there is increased
incidence of oral cancers and dentists need to be aware of this risk. The
average age for diagnosis is 52; which indicates that vigilance is important.
·
Increased gastric pH that can accompany aging
can lead to acid reflux that can be damaging teeth.
·
Increased exposure of root surfaces (gingival
recession) is also a potential problem.
·
The loss of nerve sensitivity with age can
give cover to dental problems that should receive early detection.
·
Elderly patients might also have heart
conditions or artificial joints and implants, and so will require antibiotics
to reduce their elevated risk of infection during dental work.
It was commonly believed that dental problems
and the loss of teeth were an inevitable consequence of aging. But the fact is:
Age itself isn’t a risk factor for tooth loss; if properly cared, your teeth
can last a lifetime.
With Geriatric dental health care, a person
can prevent or eliminate the progression of certain oral diseases and can stave
off certain illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. With proper
dental care, an aging person can have a healthy mouth and teeth that help them
feel, speak and eat with confidence. Everyone believes deeply in the miracle of
our dental implants and the quality of life issues. Dental Medicine understands
that geriatric dental needs not only enhancing smiles, but also to lead a
